Fair taxes and a healthy economy

Liberal Democrats are promising a cut in income tax of £700 a year benefiting thousands of families and pensioners in Bournemouth and Poole.

Under the party's new tax plans, people won't pay a penny on the first £10,000 they earn. This would take millions of pensioners and the low paid out of tax altogether.

The cuts will be paid for by closing tax loopholes, making polluters pay and introducing a 'mansion tax' on homes worth more than £2 million.

Lib Dem economics chief Vince Cable has led the debate on how Britain should fight its way back from recession and make the tax system fairer. He is committed to reducing the huge government budget deficit and returning public spending to a sustainable path. All Lib Dem tax and spending plans have been verified by independent economists.

A greener environment

We need to protect the greenbelt and the environment in our beautiful part of the country. The Liberal Democrats remain the only political force with firm ideas on how to do this.

Local people will be free to make the key decisions about housing, parks and the local environment under Lib Dem plans. The party will abolish 'Whitehall knows best' planning rules, targets and expensive quangos like the Regional Development Authorities that dictate policy.

The party have also promised green mortgages to help people make homes more energy efficient, plus major improvement to rail links including new high speed lines paid for by a tax on lorries.

Local services

We need to secure better services for the elderly and ensure that the people of Bournemouth and Poole have a greater say over how they are run.

Cutting crime and anti-social behaviour

Local people need to know that the problem of anti-social behaviour, which affects some parts of our constituency, is dealt with swiftly and effectively and that the police get all the support they need to do their job properly.

Scrapping ID cards will help put 10,000 new police officers on the beat. The Liberal Democrats propose to plough back the savings from the unwanted and unworkable scheme to increase police numbers and cut red tape, leaving the police free to target local crime hotspots.

Clean up politics

The British political system is broken. For far too long the government, whether Labour or Conservative, has been able to take voters for granted.

We need to stop Tory and Labour MPs pretending its back to business as usual. The Liberal Democrats are the only party committed to far-reaching reform. The party has pledged a comprehensive overhaul of expenses, to curb the big donations that are polluting politics, to cut back on the number of Ministers and MPs and to give local people the right to sack any MP who is found guilty of wrongdoing.

The party is also committed to voting reform, which is the only means to end the safe seat culture that has made it too easy for MPs to ignore the wishes of their constituents.

Paddy Ashdown said: "It is time to hand back power to where it really belongs, with the voters, and offer people a real choice at every election."
